The price of innovation: NYT, Twitter & Hacker

in brands under fire,twitter

One of the most frustrating things a social media advocate hears is that “it’s too risky” to market in the new digital era with so much negativism and caos, inadvertantly exposing the brand to all the monkeys out there (A. Keen). In reply you get the “well everyone’s out there talking about your brand so you don’t have a choice”.

Well actually you do. And even if you didn’t it would be wise to ensure that when entering the social media arena you actually have at least one person plugged in 24 hours a day. The Gawker runs with the story: Did Someone Hack into the New York Times Twitter Account? Nick Denton (Gawker’s publisher) who received, along with 1/2 a million other people, on his iPhone a message from the NYT‘s twitter feed “everyone visit [tinyurl] for 100% FREE webcam girls/guys doing anything you ask them in the chat, I love it personally.”

So someone had hacked the Times Twitter account. At least their reply couldn’t have been in a more authentic, human, pissed off tone…

I actually followed the link as the girls/guys apparently will do anything you ask them to. In this case I was thrown out of the chat and called a freak – I just wanted Netcabo for once to actually supply the bandwidth I actually pay for. So I guess they don’t solve everything. I can now see why the NYT was so pissed.

"One of the most frustrating things a social media advocate hears is that “it’s too risky”…" You just cannot imagine how many times I ear that and all the possible variations… Oh. Right. You can…
